WORKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE.

Why It Matters

For many kids, a first job is a big step toward independence—but not every young person has the same opportunities to gain job skills in a safe, supportive environment. In Colorado, youth from under-resourced neighborhoods often face barriers to employment, financial literacy, and career pathways.

The Lucky Bike Internship uses the bicycle to open doors. Kids (ages 14–22) gain hands-on job readiness training in a real bike shop while also building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. By providing mentoring, technical training, and financial literacy, the internship helps students prepare for meaningful employment and brighter futures.

How It Works

  • Paid Internship – A 3-month program with the option to continue for a year-long apprenticeship.
  • Small Cohorts – Up to 8 interns per cohort ensures one-on-one mentoring and real responsibility.
  • Flexible Schedule – Up to 30 hours per month, designed to fit around school commitments.
Hands-On Training – Interns learn bike mechanics, retail operations, customer service, and shop management.
  • Life Skills – Curriculum includes personal finance (budgeting), workplace communication, and resume/interview preparation.
  • Mentorship – Interns work alongside experienced shop managers and mentors at Lucky Bikes Re-Cyclery.
  • Support – Transportation assistance available if needed.

Impact

By the end of the internship, students walk away with:

  • Real-world job experience in a professional retail setting
  • Technical skills like bike repair, shop operations, and customer service
  • Social-emotional skills like teamwork, resilience, and communication
  • Personal financial literacy and budgeting basics
A stronger resume and interview practice to prepare for future jobs
  • Confidence, independence, and exposure to new career paths—including retail, mechanics, and even entrepreneurship

Many interns continue on to jobs in local bike shops, retail, or other industries—with Lucky Bikes’s help in placement and references. More importantly, they gain the confidence and skills to keep moving forward
